Run, Ludwig, run!
A great novel - a great story
"Run away, as far as you can!" the local priest advises brothers Ludwig and Heinrich Seligmann. Shortly afterwards, in March 1933, the two young men flee Nazi Germany for France, marking the end point of Rafael Seligmann’s biographical novel about his father Ludwig’s childhood and youth. It is a happy, fulfilled time. Ludwig’s father is a prosperous merchant, faith and tradition shape the family’s life. Ludwig is the only one of his siblings who is allowed to attend grammar school. He trains with the soccer team and sings in the synagogue’s choir. He experiences the last golden years of peaceful coexistence between Jewish and non-Jewish Germans that comes to a horrific end in 1930 with the rise of the Nazis.
